Privacy and cookies
Homewire is a static website. There are no accounts to create, no comment boxes and no forms, so we collect very little about the people who read it. This page explains what that little is, who else handles it and what would change if we ever added analytics or ads.
- Accounts, comments and forms
- None. There is nothing to sign up for or fill in.
- Cookies set by Homewire
- None at launch.
- Analytics and advertising
- None at launch. This page changes before either is added.
- Server logs
- IP address, browser user agent, page requested, referring page and time, kept for a limited period.
- Only what you choose to send us.
- Selling your data
- We don’t.
What our server records when you visit
Like nearly every web server, ours writes a short log entry for each request. An entry typically holds:
- your IP address
- your browser’s user agent string, which names the browser and operating system
- the page or file requested, and whether it loaded
- the date and time of the request
- the page that linked to us, if your browser sends it
We use these logs for security and troubleshooting: finding errors and broken links, and dealing with abusive traffic. They’re kept for a limited period and then deleted. We don’t use them to build profiles of visitors, and we don’t combine them with other data.
Cloudflare and our hosting
The site may be delivered through Cloudflare, a content delivery and security network. When it is, your request passes through Cloudflare’s servers, which process data such as your IP address to serve pages quickly and filter out attacks. Cloudflare handles that data under its own privacy policy.
If Cloudflare’s security checks are active, it may set a strictly necessary cookie, for example after showing a browser challenge. That cookie helps tell people from automated traffic. Our hosting provider stores the site’s files and the server logs described above.
If we add analytics or advertising
We may later add analytics, such as Google Analytics, to learn which guides help people, or advertising, such as Google AdSense, to cover running costs. Neither is on the site at launch. Before either goes live, we will update this page to describe:
- which service is used and what it collects
- the cookies it sets and how long they last
- how to opt out or change your choices, including any consent controls shown to visitors in places that require them
Google explains how it handles data from sites that use its services in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
When you email us
If you write to hello@192-168-1-1ip.uno, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach. We use them to check the guide you mention and, where we can, to reply.
Our email provider stores messages for us, and we keep them only as long as they’re useful for handling your note and tracking corrections. We don’t add you to a mailing list, sell your address or share it with advertisers. Ask, and we’ll delete your message. Please leave router and Wi-Fi passwords out of anything you send.
Kids and this site
Homewire is a general-audience site about home networking and isn’t aimed at children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children. If you think a child has emailed us, let us know and we’ll delete the message.
What you can control
Because we hold so little, most choices are simple. You can read every page without cookies, and you decide what goes into an email. Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, or to have it deleted. Email us to make that request.
Changes to this policy
If our practices change, we’ll update this page before the change takes effect and revise the effective date at the top. Bigger changes, such as adding analytics or ads, will be described here in plain terms.
Asking us about your data
Send any privacy question to hello@192-168-1-1ip.uno. The contact page explains what we can and can’t help with.
